The Emotional Phases of Cosmetic Surgery

post surgical depressionChoosing to change a physical aspect of yourself through surgery is a very personal and emotional thing. It is not unusual for a person considering cosmetic surgery to experience mixed feelings of excitement and jitters during consultation followed by panic and self-doubt after the procedure.

Depending on your procedure, it can take several months for you to see the final results, during which time you may experience a range of emotions. These feelings are completely normal and short-lived, but it helps to be prepared for the vacillating emotions associated with cosmetic surgery recovery.

Here are some of the emotional phases you can expect:

“What have I done?”
The first few days following cosmetic surgery are usually the hardest. This feeling of panic is likely to kick in 3 to 5 days after the procedure. During your first week of recovery, you are required to get plenty of rest. The lack of activity leaves you with a lot of time to ponder your actions and doubts.

“I don’t look like myself!”
As your body continues to heal in the second and third week of recovery, you will begin to see the results of the procedure. The changes to your former self will be more apparent, which may lead to conflicting feelings – especially if the transformation was drastic.

“Maybe this was a mistake!”
Once the changes become apparent, you may start to experience feelings of self-doubt for the next 2 to 3 months every time you look at yourself in the mirror. If the procedure was in preparation for a future event, such as a wedding or holiday, you might feel empty after the excitement and anticipation of the event passes.

I’m so glad I had the courage to get the procedure!

Most of the people who undergo cosmetic surgery are pleased and satisfied with the results and their new self. 3 to 6 months after the procedure, you will be in a position to realize the impact of the procedure, which will boost your confidence.

Feelings of panic after plastic surgery may last for a few days to several weeks, and are strongest when you’re least occupied. To prevent and manage your post-op stress, you should prepare appropriately before the procedure by:

1. Creating a strong support system with your spouse, sibling, parent, friend, or adult child who you can freely talk with about your anxieties and feelings

2. Setting up the essentials so you can rest with minimal distractions – healthy foods, books, magazines, clothes, TV remote, etc.

3. Follow your surgeon’s instructions with regard to rest, medications, alcohol avoidance, nutrition, etc.

Lastly, different procedures have different healing processes. So, be patient and don’t rush any judgments until the final results show. If you experience any problems during your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact your surgeon for assistance.

Dermal Fillers 101: Let’s Discuss the Basics

beverly hills dermal fillers

Difference between Botox® & Dermal Fillers.
Among the treatments available for eliminating facial wrinkles, fillers and injectables are perhaps the most common ones, but the two are very different, says Dr. Golshani. While injectables like Botox® and Dysport work by temporarily paralyzing active muscle, dermal fillers work by plumping the problem area to restore its volume and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Dermal fillers include Juvederm, Selphyl, Perlane, Restylane, and Radiesse, all of which can be used to re-contour the face and correct wrinkles by restoring plumpness to the cheeks, chin, lips, lower eyes, and other areas that have lost volume due to aging. These procedures can:

Soften fine lines and wrinkles

Enhance hollow areas of the face

Enhance the appearance of settled scars

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Fillers are administered by injecting the top layer of the skin with hyaluronic acid, or some other naturally-occurring substance in the body that plumps the tissue to create a soft, natural-looking outcome.

The procedure is painless, and the level of discomfort largely depends on the area being treated. Dermal fillers are typically prepared with lidocaine, which is numbing agent. Furthermore, a numbing agent can be applied to the treatment area to manage pain.

For the highly sensitive areas such as the lips, the doctor can perform a nerve block, which is a minimally painful procedure that numbs the lips.

Dermal Fillers – The Procedure

Before the filler treatment, your doctor will evaluate your facial structure and skin tone to gain better understanding of the areas that need filling.

Then, the filler material will be injected into the designated areas. Topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand, though most patients find the pain manageable. The process takes between 15 and 60 minutes depending on the number of areas that need treatment.

No downtime is required after treatment with injectable fillers, though you can use an ice pack to reduce any swelling that occurs.

The duration of the dermal filler depends on the product used, though it typically lasts 6-12 months. You need more than one treatment.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

The ideal candidate for dermal fillers should be in good general health, a non-smoker, and be well informed about the outcome of the procedure. For instance, you should know of the wide selection of fillers available, and be aware that the results from dermal fillers are different from those of a facelift or forehead lift.

Dermal fillers are safe, with rare occurrence of allergic reactions or serious complications from the procedure. However it is important to consult with your doctor to identify if the filling injection treatment will address your concerns.

Why Winter is Popular for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery!

winter popular cosmetic plastic surgeryTo maximize the results from cosmetic surgery, it is important to plan according to the season, says Dr. Golshani, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon. It is rational to undergo certain cosmetic procedures during certain months of the year to conceal the scars and swelling, allow enough time for safe recovery, and provide an appropriate alibi if you wish to keep your surgical procedure hidden from some people.

“it is important to plan according to the season.”

Why Winter is the Perfect Time for Plastic Surgery

But universally, the winter months, from mid-December through to March, present the perfect time to undergo any type of cosmetic procedure, from liposuction to facelift. The fact that the cooler weather requires bulkier clothing means that you can conveniently conceal bruising, swelling and bandages, and avoid the damaging effect from exposure to the sun.

Items like scarves, hats, and turtlenecks hide the effects of rhinoplasty, eyelid tuck, facelift, brow lift, and laser resurfacing. Bulky sweaters and trousers, on the other hand, can easily camouflage the obvious change in body habits from tummy tuck or liposuction, breast reduction, or breast augmentation.

Also, the long holiday weekends around the Christmas and New Year festivities contribute further time off so you have enough time to recover from the procedure without taking extra leave from work, even as you hide away from colleagues, friends, and family.

That said, there are a couple cosmetic procedures that mostly occur during wintertime:

Chemical peels and other laser procedures.
The cooler winter months make it easier to have less contact with the sun, and you can easily stay sheltered for one to two weeks after treatment. Additionally, your winter wardrobe should keep you completely covered up, exposing less skin and increasing your chances for exceptional post-surgery success.

Laser hair removal.
Sunspot removal procedures generally require that you don’t tan your skin. Lasers generally target different pigmented structures on the patient’s skin. If there’s background skin pigmentation, like a tan, the procedure will require much lower energies to be used over a greater number of treatment sessions.

Since the chances of laying out in the sun on a beach or by a pool are very low during the winter months, and many people are realizing that tanning beds can be quite unhealthy, your skin should be bright and perfect for lasers to target sun damages areas of hair follicles on the skin.

Sclerotherapy.
Winter is also a great time for the treatment of unwanted varicose veins and spider veins on the legs. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution into the visible veins to cause them to collapse, followed by compression to help prevent them from returning to their original state.

It is recommended that patients wear compression hose after the procedure to optimize the outcome. This is much easier in winter than in the hot summer sun.

Final Note
Winter is a great time for many cosmetic procedures & not just the examples listed above. You can have exponential success if you properly follow post-procedure instructions. You can also take the opportunity to diet, exercise, or change your hairstyle for a complete transformation.

Necklift

beverly hills necklift golshani

Necklifts are not as popular as other procedures, but they still have such a lasting impact on patients who seek to reverse the signs of the natural aging process. The patient shown above was shocked when she saw how much younger she looked in the mirror after seeing herself for the first time after the procedure.

Is Botox a Good Treatment for Teeth Grinding?

botox treatment teeth grindingTeeth grinding, medically referred to as Bruxism, can cause extensive tooth wear. In severe cases, it can also damage dental restorations like fillings and crowns. Bruxism, a condition described as the unconscious and excessive clenching of the jaw and/or excessive grinding of teeth especially when asleep, is believed to affect between 8 and 31 percent of the population.

The exact causes of teeth grinding at night are not known, though studies have connected several factors with the condition, including anxiety, daytime stress, loud snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, smoking, caffeine, heavy alcohol use, and certain antidepressant drugs. Common symptoms associated with teeth grinding include headaches, hypersensitive teeth, and aching jaw muscles. It may also cause other minimal symptoms, making it difficult for some to realize that they have the condition.

Treatment Options for Bruxism

For most patients, teeth grinding is usually a habit or temporary condition that can be easily fixed by wearing a night guard and addressing the cause – stress, anxiety, etc. But those in relationships may not find protective night guards as a glamorous or romantic solution, even if they help your partner sleep better. In such cases, Botox injections can be a good option.

How Botox Treats Teeth Grinding

The American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) has proven Botox to be a suitable treatment option for targeting and treating spasticity and excessive muscle activity. Many alternative treatments, like dental devices and anti-inflammatory medications do not address the actual source of the problem. While dental appliances can successfully safeguard teeth from damage when sleeping, they do not stop the painful side effects of bruxism.

Directly injecting small doses of Botox into the large muscle that supports jaw movements weakens it sufficiently to stop involuntary clenching or grinding. This considerably relaxes the muscle, stops pain, and minimizes wear and tear on the teeth caused by bruxism.

Botox treatment also reduces or eliminates associated headaches and damage to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Botox does not interfere with voluntary jaw movements, such as talking, chewing, or facial expressions. However, you are required to get at least three repeat injections every six months to maintain the results. A good number of people enjoy long-term results after only three treatments, though the results partly depend on your lifestyle.

The pressure exerted on your teeth during grinding can be up to 20 times greater than that of normal biting and chewing. Consequently, the incisors can shorten and form sharp edges and small chip marks, while the canines can become covered in notches. At the same time, affected teeth can loosen and any fillings gouged out.

For most patients, a Botox treatment, or series of treatments, for teeth grinding helps to break the pattern and gives them enough time to manage the event that triggered bruxism – anxiety, stress, sleep apnea, etc.

Dr. Golshani offers Botox treatment in Beverly Hills. Botox is used for many applications. If you are interested in Botox treatment, then please call our office @ (310) 274-3481 to speak with a Botox specialist.

Will Pregnancy Harm Breast Implants?

There’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to pregnancies. Preparing a nursery, coordinating a baby shower and being surrounded by a beautiful pregnancy glow, these are just some of the positive things that happen during a pregnancy. At the same time, pregnancy can be an overwhelming process.

“Will My Pregnancy Affect My Breast Implants Results?”

One of them, which is the second scariest to many women is the changing of their bodies. For moms with beautiful breast implants, one of their main concerns is often, “Will my pregnancy affect my breast implants?”. It is a legitimate concern that Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Golshani, weighs in on:

“The actual physical breast implant itself will not be affected by pregnancy, however, your breasts may change as a result of the stretching and shrinking that occurs during pregnancy. The main issue to look for is sagging breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding run its course. If this occurs, then future correction may be worth considering, such as a breast lift. Though, I have seen many women undergo pregnancy without their breasts changing shape. Others may have minimal change, but it’s not enough to undergo corrective surgery.”

Should You Worry?

No, worry will cause unnecessary anguish and stress which is not beneficial to your pregnancy. If you have not already received breast implants, then it would be important to consider whether or not this will be an issue after deciding to create a family.

For any other questions, it would be best to consult in person with an experienced board-certified professional who can help you make an informed decision on whether or not breast implants are right for you.

Looking as Good as You Feel with a Facial Analysis

facial analysis look youngAs we age, we often suffer normal everyday “wear and tear” on the body. Does it bring us down? It can. Mentally we may be strong, perhaps stronger than ever… physically, too. Working out, eating healthy, watching calorie intake, etc. Point is, we may FEEL good, but we are not necessarily satisfied internally with our looks. We may see a different person in the mirror, one that appears tired or old.

Trying to lose weight? Try Dr. Golshani’s recommended 10-day juice cleanse.

Have You Considered a Facial Analysis?

Most of us are probably not even aware what a “facial analysis”. Facial analyses allow a certified professional, such as Dr. Golshani, to critically analyze facial features such as volume, bone structure, muscle activity, skin quality, and proportions of neck, brows, eyelids, cheeks, and forehead. It’s quite an evaluation, but it can provide you an opportunity to transform your facial structure into one that matches the way you FEEL.

So… Then What?

Well, after a thorough facial analyses has occurred, the next step is recommending procedures that are designed to enhance your facial structure and provide you with a younger appearance. After all, that is the main goal.

Most people are not ready to jump directly into surgery, so the first approach is generally topicals, chemical peels, and micro-needling – all of which are minimally invasive. Dr. Golshani has developed his very own line of products, marketed under the brand name “Avosant Skincare”. He can help you determine what products to use, the best times to use them, and for how long.

View Avosant Skincare products developed exclusively by Dr. Golshani.

Micro-needling is a relatively newer procedure, but is a highly advanced technique of smoothing wrinkles out, acne scars, stretch marks, and other features of natural aging.

Read more on the Eclipse MicroPen offered by Dr. Golshani.

The final approach to looking young is to consider plastic surgery procedures such as face lifts, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and other facial procedures that have a dramatic effect on your facial appearance. But unless you have a concerning issue, it is recommended to try minimally-invasive techniques first.

Smoothie Cleansing for Weight Loss – Dr. Golshani Approved

We’ll be strictly honest here, losing weight is infuriating – for many, it’s one of the biggest physical and mental roller coasters we’ve ever been on. We understand.

Plastic surgery is not always an option, and honestly should only be considered when other alternatives – such as what we’re about to suggest – have not provided sufficient results.

So what’s the big secret to losing weight? Well, it’s not so much a secret…

Detoxification.

We’re sure you’ve heard of this before. Also known as “juicing” (or blending, but juicing is what we recommend). No, it’s not a special diet that you’ll have to stay committed to for months or years.

In fact, it’s only a 10-day commitment! That’s right, 10 days. Possible? Dr. Golshani believes so.

Detoxification is a necessary component of weight loss – however, it is not the only component.

Greens, Greens, Greens

The “10-day smoothie cleanse”, as it is referred to, focuses on green intake.

Specifically:
Arugula, Beet Greens, Bok Choy, Chard, Collard Greens, Dandelion Greens, Kale, Lettuce, Mustard Greens, Parsley, Spinach, and Turnip Greens.

These are where all of your essential vitamin and nutrients will come from, which all aid in detoxifying all of the toxins that are stored in your fat cells that have been built up over the years.

The 10-day cleanse is designed to turn your body into a fat-burning machine, that also results in healthier skin, a clearer mind, and a host of other daily benefits.

We’ve barely scratched the surface here, but if you’re truly interested in dropping stubborn belly fat, then you could read the full book written by J.J. Smith – fully endorsed by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Golshani.

It contains day-by-day instructions on exactly what you should be juicing, as well as recommended juicers to invest in for the commitment.

If you’re not big on reading, not a problem because the book’s first 40 pages are all you need. And it’s an easy read. I wish you the best of luck!

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Debunks Anti-aging Skin Care Myths

anti-aging skin care mythsAnti-aging is always a trending topic with the influx of anti-aging treatments, claims of new, must-have products, and skin-care advice from multiple random sources. But how much of what you hear is true and helpful?

Common Anti-aging Skin Care Myths – Debunked

Myth: Dry skin causes wrinkles.

Wrinkles are caused by collagen breakdown; not dry skin. Dry skin tends to make wrinkles more obvious. That said, hydrating your skin has no effect as to whether or not you will develop wrinkles.

Myth: Since my mother looks very young for her age, I will also not show signs of aging when I get older.

There are many factors that affect how you age, including genetics and lifestyle habits, though in different measures. So, compared to genetics, your lifestyle habits will affect how you age to a greater extent. If you smoke, don’t use sunscreen, and eat a poor diet, your genetics, no matter how good they are, will not help you look younger for longer.

Myth: Moisturizing helps prevent wrinkles.

Applying moisturizer regularly does not prevent wrinkles, though it helps your skin stay hydrated. It does not matter what ingredients are in the moisturizer. It simply has no effect on wrinkle prevention.

Myth: I don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days.

Your skin is exposed to UV radiation, including the UVA aging rays, every day irrespective of the amount of cloud cover or precipitation. Solar radiation is the primary cause of aging, and you should never go outside without applying sunscreen.

Myth: Smiles and frowns are the primary source of wrinkles.

This is not entirely false since wrinkles can occur when muscles are used to create facial expressions. That said, the biggest cause of wrinkles is the loss of volume in the face due to the natural breakdown of fat and collagen. Fortunately, this process can be counteracted through the application of topical treatments containing peptides that enhance the ability o the skin to produce its own collagen.

Myth: The more expensive a skin-care treatment, the more effective it is.

In many cases, it is not the actual science that makes a product expensive, but the packaging and possibly inclusion of perfume. Some people prefer to buy expensive skin-care products in department stores assuming that they work better, which is not necessarily true. It is better to go for tried-and-tested brands that spend more on research and development than packaging.

In Conclusion
You should always be careful of product advertisements that claim to make you look younger in days. Everyone wants to prevent and correct any signs of aging, but you cannot simply trust every advertisement, especially since they are not monitored by the FDA. Exercising your facial muscles is also counterproductive. Instead, avoid bad lifestyle habits that cause you to age faster, like excess consumption of alcohol and smoking. Also, increase your intake of foods that boost collagen production.
